Raging Bull-dozes Mijares for first time in his career and makes history!
Vic "The Raging Bull" Darchinyan, a southpaw slugger from Armenia, had just grabbed the IBF super flywieght title from Dimitri "The Baby" Kirilov earlier in the Summer. Nothing spells a champion better then going out and trying to win it all. This of course has NEVER been done in the super flyweight division. Ever. Cristian Mijares hadn't lost in SIX years. None were knockouts. The slick southpaw from Mexico had the crowd behind him at the Home Depot Center as he attmpeted to defend the WBA and WBC belts for the third time in a row. His resume is only superseded by his skill, as Darchinyan was the underdog for the first time in his career, even coming off 3 KO wins with a draw in between after his upset KO loss to Nonito Donaire.

On a rainy night in Carson City, history was made. Lightning struck twice as the super flyweight division was unified for the first time, and Cristian Mijares got knocked out for the first time in his career. Darchinyan showed that a slugger can get scientific, with feints and jabs that lined Mijares up for big left hands all night. A perfect was in the opening stanza, when Darchinyan strafed Mijares with jabs until he finally ducked real low and got caught with a huge left uppercut that laid Mijares out for a good 3 seconds. The hyena like smile that was Mijares' fight face, seemed to have been wiped off by that uppercut.

Thus spelled the rest of the night for Mijares, not gaining any control and being owned by Darchinyan's fists coming at every direction. To the body and head he went, and eventually the Mexican's pride would be broken in the end of the ninth. Mijares heard the 10 second warning, and he retreated to fight another round -- hands down from fatigue and a hard left hand seconds earlier. Darchinyan dove in for the kill and blinded Mijares with a jab then ran in with an overhand left that made Mijares spin like a Jabbawockee on the mat as the bell to end the ninth round rang. Game over. WBA, WBC and IBF are one big happy family in the super flyweight division. And who's yo daddy?? Vic Darchinyan.
